As a result, my protagonists often lacked internal conflict and didn’t always drive the story by pursuing their goals. It’s just that for me, characterization was usually a second thought. Not that writing plot-driven stories is a weakness. I’ve long recognized this as a weakness in my writing process. When I don’t consciously focus on character, my instinct is to jump to plot. ![]() Writing character-driven stories is a challenge for me. I’m more attracted to the cool thing my characters have to do, whatever it might be: the McGuffin they must attain, the malicious force they have to stop, the adventures they have along the way. Developing an interesting character isn’t usually how I go about writing a story, at least not at first. ![]()
